At different points through primary school children complete different statutory assessments.

• At the end of Reception, assessments are carried out by teachers and provide parents and carers, practitioners and teachers with a well-rounded picture of a child’s knowledge, understanding and abilities, their attainment against expected levels (good levels of development), and their readiness for year 1.
• In Year 1, pupils complete the phonic screen. The phonics screen is a quick and easy check of your child’s phonics knowledge.
• In Year 2, children no longer complete statutory assessments (SATs). Like other year groups, teacher assessment is used to determine if pupils have reached the expected standard for the end of the year. This assessment is supported by assessments in reading and maths which take place in school.
• In Year 2, any children who did not sit or scored below the national age-related standard, will have the opportunity to resist the phonics screening.
• In Year 4, pupils complete a multiplication tables check. This is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times table questions.
• In Year 6, pupils complete SATs tests in reading, maths and grammar, punctuation and spelling. Teacher assessment is used to determine writing standard at the end of Key Stage 2.
