Intent

At Leverhulme Primary School, we believe that a strong PSHE education is important to help our pupils develop into well-rounded members of society, who can make a positive contribution to their community. Our PSHE curriculum is strongly tied to our Global Citizenship, RSE (Relationships and Sex Education), relationships, health education and pastoral care programme. There is a separate policy for Sex and Relationships Education.

Our PSHE and Global Citizenship curriculum equips children for life now and in the future. PSHE is a vital subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe in our ever changing and challenging world. Through our PSHE programme we aim to provide children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens. Our children are provided with an understanding of healthy and respectful relationships, as well as lifelong skills in health and wellbeing, money and work.  We want every child to grow into a confident, caring, resilient and respectful young citizen.

Through a focus on global citizenship, we encourage young people to develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to engage with the world. Education for global citizenship is not an additional subject, it is a framework for learning, reaching beyond school to the wider community. It can be promoted in class through the existing curriculum or through new initiatives and activities. At Leverhulme, we foster the belief that we can all make a difference.

The Leverhulme Values underpin PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) and Global Citizenship in our school. Each half term has a value focus, which is celebrated in class and through our Celebration Assemblies. Wherever possible, the values are a reference point for the PSHE lessons and wider pastoral support in order that children can “live” the values and appreciate their meaning in action.

This document explains PSHE and Global Citizenship and how we teach these subjects at Leverhulme Primary School. We are working in partnership with other local schools to encourage our pupils to see themselves as global citizens who can make a difference to their local community and the wider world.
